Despite suggestions to the contrary on Monday, it looks likely that any deal bringing Sergio Aguero to Stamford Bridge won’t be happening this season after the forward played in a Champions League qualifier for Atletico Madrid last night. His appearance – in which he was apparently very impressive and scored a great goal - means he would be cup-tied in the Champions League should he move to another club.
The Sun seems convinced the chase is over, reporting this morning Aguero saying: "I've always said I wanted to stay at Atletico and this is what has happened.”
Interestingly however, the Daily Mail takes a slightly different tack suggesting that Aguero requested to be left out of the side so that a potential deal could be kept alive. Who can tell whether there’s any truth to the rumour, but if so it could be interpreted as both encouraging and concerning. On the one hand, perhaps we’ve actually got a top-quality player who wants to join Chelsea, but on the other, the club may have not moved quickly enough or put up enough cash to do a deal.
But it’s all speculation and, as the swelling list of supposed Chelsea summer targets touted by the media has shown, you really can’t read much into it. But here’s another piece of wanton speculation for you (source – me): perhaps because of the inflated market Chelsea have deliberately let him get cup tied so as they can drive the price down? Who knows…
